ORDER OF OPERATIONS
It is very important that you carry out numerical operations in the correct order. This order is used both for positive and negative numbers.
If you do not use the correct order of operations, the answer will often be wrong!
It helps to remember BIDMAS:
Brackets are worked first
Indices are next
Division
Multiplication
Addition
Subtraction
EXAMPLES:
1. 3X4+5X6=12+30=42 NOT 3X4+5X6=12+5X6=17X6=103;
2. (5-12)X(4+1)= -7X5= -35;
3. (32 – 6)3 = (9-6)3 = 33 = 27.
